1 Competent Judges to Be NamedRules Governing Exhibit. A corn carnival Is planned for farmers of Rock Island county, Henry P. Vierich, cashier of the Mechanics Merchants bank today making announcement that the banking institution will give $20 in gold as prize money. Some of the conditions imposed: The contest is open only to farmers of Rock Island county. Corn exhibited must be in the name of the grower.

Each exhibitor must show five ears, stripped, but with husks attached, the husks' being tied together with a tag bearing the exhibitor's name attached thereto. For the best five ears $10 will be awarded; $5 will be the prize for the second best exhibit and $2.50 for the third best. For the longest and heaviest ear $2.50 will be given. All corn entered will be exhibited at" the M. M.

Taylor, acknowledged farm expert, will be invited on his return from New Mexico, to serve as one of the judges. Realization that wealth of the country lies in the soil and that the farmer must be prosperous if the nation is to prosper has awakened bankers to a realization that they, with all others, must be interested in "how to grow two blades of grass where one grew before." 11-18 FATALLY HURT WHILE AITEHDIHGTO DUTIES Gustav Miller, Gateman at 23d Street Crossing, Bun Down by Freight TRAMP IS ONLY WITNESS Promises to Tell Story to Police, But Fails to Return Unconscious Since Sunday. Gustav Miller, gateman at the Twenty-third street crossing, was strucA. and fatally injured at 6 p. m. Suno evening by Burlington freight train No.

68, known as the Chicago freight He was on duty at the time and sustained two scalp wounds and has concussion of the brain. Dr. A. H. Arp, the attending physician, says he will not recover.

Mr. Miller was unconscious when picked up by a member of the freifeui crew and he was still unconsciou late this afternoon. He was placed lu the ambulance and hurried to the city hospital. He is close to 70 years of age. Tramp Is Only Witness.

Ben Brophy, a tramp, was the only eye-witness and details of the accident have not been learned from him by the police. He visited the police station and gave assurance that he would return this morning, but he has not kept his promise. It is thought that the gatekeeper was attending to one of the lamps on the gate when he was struck. He lowered the gates as the train approached and then walked to the north gate, which took him across the tracks. The crew on the engine did not see him till after he had been struck.

The freight train is made up in Davenport and it is due here at 6 tCclock, being on time last evening. The train was not traveling fast when Mr. Miller was run down. His son Herman Miller, was killed at the Fifteenth street crossing and a brother, Frank Miller, was also killed by a Rock Island freight train a few years ago. He has a wife and three grown children.
