Pl Electric-to-gas conversion unit is mounted outdoors QUESTION: We don't get enough hot water from our old gas water heater and it probably wastes a lot of gas. What new types of super efficient gas water heaters are available? How much will installing one save? F.D.

ANSWER: Installing a new super-efficient gas water heater can lower your utility bills and provide enough hot water for many morning showers. There are also some new designs available for simple conversion fr6m electricity to gas. Many of the premium models have 10-year no-leak tank warranties. Several special designs of heat exchanger flues reduce gas consumption, improve hot water output and shorten recovery time. Switching to the most efficient gas water heater from an old one can save the typical family more than $100 per year.

Switching from an electric water heater to a new outdoor gas or oil model can save more than $300 per year. One efficient design uses three separate flue columns inside the tank. This increases the surface area with the water for quicker and more efficient heat transfer. The inside of the flues are also baffled to slow the hot gases and cause turbulence for additional heat transfer. Another unique design uses a submerged burner chamber.

The entire burner area is sealed and totally surrounded by the water in the tank. This reduces heat losses and insures maximum heat transfer into the water. When selecting any water heater, check its energy factor (EF) rating. It indicates the overall operating cost. EF ratings for new gas water heaters range from' about .53 to .65.

Your old water heater is probably much lower. The EF rating takes into account the water heater burner and heat exchanger efficiencies and the standby losses from the water tank, pipes, etc. First Hour Rating (FHR) indicates how much continuous hot water is available. Focus on humorous issues, pleasant days in your life, exciting fantasies, or focus on relaxing scenes. This is the way you interrupt these disruptive and depressing thoughts. You may have to do this a couple dozen times a day, but in a period of about three weeks you will find that your control over your thoughts has increased to the point where you are not spending much time focusing on these unpleasant thoughts anymore.

The evidence seems to indicate that when we repeatedly think about distressing things our physical health can be weakened because we become more stressed, causing our immune system to work overtime. Eighty eight percent came back to homes that were unlivable and after a year 60 percent of those victims who wanted to rebuild were still repairing their homes. Two months after the hurricane, 29 percent of the victims scored very high on measures of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Thirty nine percent had high levels of intrusive and avoidance thoughts about the hurricane.

They experienced flashbacks that were so severe they were hard to control. After a year, 17 percent had a number of PTSD symptoms and 21 percent of the victims were still experiencing intrusive and avoidance thoughts. Sleep was certainly a common symptom. Depression was common. Some people became pessimistic and listless to the point where they would not socialize, exercise, or distract themselves to get away from their distressing thoughts. Apparently women are more likely than men to dwell on distressing thoughts and to become depressed more frequently. In time they become poor problem solvers, have no sense of mastery, and both of these conditions lead to depression.

Modern psychology teaches us that it is not wise nor healthy to focus on miserable things obsessively. Instead of believing that focusing and dwelling on threatening and dangerous situations makes them better, they are advised to examine that notion and change it to the following: focusing or dwelling on threatening or dangerous situations often makes them worse.
