McCLOSKEY Conductor Falls; Finishes Concert Seated in Chairing ROME (AP) Conductor Pierre Monteux collapsed and fell six feet from the Wednesday night while conducting Ravel's "Pavane for a Dead Princess" in Rome's Santa Cecilia Auditorium. The conductor, who will be 89 on Saturday, slipped between guard rails that had been placed around the podium for his protection. He fell heavily, landing on his left shoulder and the left side of his face, as the audience cried out in horror.

Doctors in the audience carried him to a nearby seat. After 20 minutes he walked slowly back to the stage, expressed his regrets and asked if the audience wanted him to continue. Many cried no, fearing for health. Monteux started to walk turned back. Seated in a chair, he finished the concert.
