Glenn Prichard pitched a dandy four-hit shutout in the second game. The Angels got just five hits off lefty Jerry Garvin, two of them in the second inning producing the game's only run.

Drevnak again beat out an infield hit, and Pat Kelly tripled him home. entertain Waterloo at 7:30 in O'Donnell Stadium. Panick allowed just four hits in the extra-inning opener. He was wilder than usual, issuing seven walks, and he needed a rally by his team after the Twins got a run in the ninth to break the 1-1 tie that had stood since the fourth inning. The Angels rallied after two men had been retired in the ninth.

Dave Drevnak and Kent Froede both beat out infield hits. Ponciano Cruz singled to right to score Drevnak with the half title, they would have had to lose both their games and Burlington swept its pair. Instead, the Angels came back to ice the cake with a 1-0 victory over the Twins in the second game. A crowd of 2,291 fans watched the double -header. Wisconsin Rapids had already clinched the Northern Division first-half title before dropping the two games Sunday.

Second half of the season begins tonight, when the Angels first half of the Midwest League baseball season. Frank Panick pitched the opener of the Sunday night double header in Davenport's John O'Donnell Stadium. He emerged with his 10th victory of the season when the Angels rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 3-2 victory over Wisconsin Rapids. Speth's car died in the infield and Weedon's car had a broken tire, so both retired as Steffe hustled on to eventually overtake Strube and close some ground on Bitner. Ironically, in the line-up for the second restart Speth's car wouldn't star and Steffe, in line behind him, elected to have a push truck start him rather than give him a boost with his expensive race machine. Dan Green ran second to Roberts in the novice feature and Gary Bielema was third. John Bivins and Mike Snyder won the street class races to conclude the program.

But it was careful driving that got the veteran Peoria driver into position to breeze home. In the original line-up for the 25-lap late model feature, retired, reducing the original field of 18 cars to 13. Bitner on this restart was in front, and he drove in front the remaining 24 laps. Bitner, who brings a solid delegation of fans with him to the East Moline racing plant, was running so quietly and smoothly that he occasionally had to coax a backfire from his Chevy heading into the turns to make sure the scorers caught his number. Hershel Roberts got home first in the novice division feature race, and he also had a landslide win.

"Im pitching close to it, where I want to be at this stage," VandeCasteele said Saturday as he visited his family in Moline while waiting for the doubleheader between his Wisconsin Rapids team and the Quad-City Angels to be canceled. "I think I'm throwing my fastball a little harder, and my control's getting a little better. I still throw the fastball and curve primarily. I've been working some on my change-up." It was about a year ago that VandeCasteele, who had compiled good statistics as a pitcher for Moline High School, Black Hawk College and the Moline Reds semipro teams but who hadn't been given a tumble in the baseball draft, attended a Minnesota Twins' tryout camp in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Twins signed him, put him at Geneva, N.Y., in the New York Pennsylvania Rookie League, and he posted the lowest earned run average in the history of the league. This year, he's moved up a notch, to Wisconsin Rapids in the Class A Midwest League. "I'm facing a little better hitters this season, but then, the pitchers are probably a little more mature, too," said "VandeCasteele, who is now 21. Same team, a year older VandeCasteele is maintaining the hot pace he established out east last summer. During the first half of this season, he has compiled an 8-2 won-lost record.

After throwing a shutout last Thursday, his earned run average is at about 1:70. He's been working on a four day pitching rotation during the first half. "We might switch to a five-man rotation when we get into the second half," he said. "The schedule will thin out some, although we didn't have as many double-headers backed up on us as most of the teams did in the first half." When the double-header Saturday night was canceled, the washout gave Wisconsin Rapids the Midwest League's Northern Division pennant for the first half. "This is almost the same group of players we had at Geneva last summer," VandeCasteele said.

"We're just a year older, and we're playing together better as a group." By the 62, 198-pound right-hander was ready for a nap, or a snack. "We got the longest trips in the league us and Appleton," he said, having ridden the bus all night from Wisconsin Rapids to Davenport. "It's about a five or six hour ride here." Baseball is an uncertain career for a young man. even with records like the one VandeCasteele has compiled in his first year as a pro. "I don't know where I stand in the organization, really." he said.

"They're cutting people, up and down the line. It's really hard to figure out." Until he does find out, he'll continue to go out to that flat hill every fourth or fifth night and throw as hard as he can, as accurately as he can. Who knows fastest? tigure-eignt cars will run on Saturday night, with the late Fans attack beaten Italian soccer team the year and I just didn't have the conditioning behind said Williams, a double sprint winner at the 1973 AAU meet at Bakersfield, Calif. The 6-3 Vz native New Yorker and talented Tennessee freshman Reggie Jones, the NCAA 100-yard dash champion, are expected to run against Russia's Valery Borzov in the U.S.Soviet Union meet at Durham, N.C., July 5-6. "I hope he (Borzov) runs the 100," said Williams.

"If I'm half as psyched as I was last year, I'll go under 9.9 and redeem myself as the world's fastest human." At Russia last year, Borzov declined to meet Williams on a head-to-head basis. But Williams caught him on the anchor leg of the 400-meter relay and won going away. Quarrie, who is a co-holder of the world 200-meter record of 19.8, is a Jamaican and won't run at Durham. Asked if he would like to meet Borzov, he replied, "I would like to meet all good sprinters." LOS ANGELES (UPI) -Who's, the world's fastest human? That question was still unsettled today despite Steve Williams' world record-equalling 100-meter dash time of 9.9 in the National AAU track and field championships. Williams, the 20-year-old San Diego State sophomore who was the No.

1 sprinter in the world in 1973, was a badly beaten fourth in the 200, a race captured handily by Jamaica's Don Quarrie. Quarrie ran the 200 into a wind and won in an eased-up 20.5 on a Saturday that Chicagoan Rick Wohlhuter picked up an American record with a 1 :43.9 clocking in the 800-meter run. "It was only my third 220 of model and novice machines taking over on Sunday. A thrill show will be included on the program next weekend. There were other "bumps and grinds" that didn't involve Bitner after that first lap, but they probably made his victory run easier.

He was running comfortably ahead through 14 laps, but on that lap, three of his most capable challengers tangled. Jim Strube of Peoria was chasing Bitner and Ernie Speth of Davenport, Ron Weedon of Pleasant Valley and Duane Steffe of East Moline three of the hottest cars in the race were battling for third. The two losses drop Moline's record to 5-6 for the season, 3-3 in the Double League. Galesburg is now 2-4 in league play and 3-4 overall.

Saturday's twin bill between the two teams was rained out. Both games saw superb pitching performances by FRIDAY'S GAME DAV CEN several balls rising from the fast turf on wood. But he was never in any real danger. Spain's Manuel Orantes, needed only 55 minutes to eliminate Harold Solomon of Silver Spring, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1. Defending champion Jan Kodes of Czechoslovakia, miffed at his sixth seedingt opened center court proceedings by defeating Sherwood Stewart of Houston, 6-3, 64, 9-7.

Fourth-seeded Stan Smith had too many shots for fellow American Grover Reed and won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. Bjorn Borg, the 18-year-old Swedish fifth seed, had his usual trouble with Graham Stilwell, former British Davis Cupper, and dropped a set before moving on with a 6-1, 4-6, 64, 6-1 victory on the center court. WIMBLEDON, ENGLAND (UPI) Topseeded John Newcombe of Australia, showing the effects of lack of practice on grass, opened his campaign for the men's singles crown in the $234,480 Wimbledon Tennis championships today by beating Georges Goven of France, 6-3, 6-2, 8-6. Goven, fast on his feet and with nothing to lose, went for every shot and gave Newcombe more opposition than expected. The Australian, who considers himself defending champion since he won the 1971 title and could not compete the next two years because of tennis politics, looked relieved when the 1 hour 26 minute match ended.

He was pulled out of position more than is usual and caught MOLINE ab rbi ab rbi perhaps the most exciting and (with 16 goals) the highest-scoring day of the tournament Sunday to join Brazil, East Germany, Yugoslavia and West Germany as the elite last eight in the toughest soccer competition in the world. "There are no outsiders in this party," said Dutch manager Rinus Michels. "Every team will be hard to beat." The shock of the day was at Stuttgart where the predicted Roman Carnival by second-favorite Italy against Poland turned from a fiesta to a fiasco. The Poles, playing soccer, sent the aging Italians reeling out of the Cup with goals by Andrzej Szar-mach, the competition's top scorer, and by midfielder Kazimierf Deyna. More than 500 Italian fans attacked several Italian players as they tried to board the team bus afterwards and police had to protect Valcareggi as the spectators hurled missiles at the squad.

Poland's defeat gave Argentina its chance against lowly Haiti and it seized it eagerly with a 4-1 win to qualify as second in Group Four. One of the finest displays of the day came from the irrepressible Johan Cruyff, sometimes labeled the world greatest soccer player, in Holland's 4-1 defeat of Bulgaria. Cruyff played a major part in every goal and thus led his- team to the top of Group Three, followed by Sweden, which convincingly defeated Uruguay 3-0. Sweden is the only team in the tournament which so far has not conceded a goal. (UPI) -A steady rain Sunday forced postponement of the second day of qualifications for the Schaefer 500 United States Auto Club National Championship car race scheduled for June 30 at the Pocono International Raceway.

Ten cars were left on the line at the end of Saturday's qualifying runs including the Coyote of A.J. Foyt, who had taken one abortive run on Saturday, blowing an engine, and then spun during a subsequent practice period in the second turn. The cars will be allowed one qualification run when the Pocono track reopens on Thursday at 10 a.m. Foyt, who was ready for his second attempt just before the 6 p.m. deadline, was incensed when Tom Bigelow took three practice laps and three more qualifying laps before being waved off by his car owner Rolla Volstedt.

Foyt was left steaming since Bigelow's run had taken up the valuable few minutes at the close of the day. Those drivers expected to take time trials Thursday, in addition to Foyt, are Roger McCluskey, 1973 USAC National Champion, Johnny Parsons, Bigelow, Eldon Rasmussen, Larry Cannon, George Snider and Rick Muther. Two of the 10 cars have no drivers assigned. Among those who qualified on Saturday in the 33-car field include a front row of Bobby Unser, Steve Krisiloff and Wal-ly Dallenbach. In the second row are Gordon Johncock, Johnny Rutherford and Al Unser.
