Stephen Lucas Smith, 32, was charged in the Feb. 22 death of Matthew Pohl, 44, of Moline, who was discovered in an alleyway in the 2400 block of 16th Street, Moline.

The two had met for a marijuana deal that day, and Mr. Smith, intent upon leaving the scene, drove over Mr. Pohls body, according to court testimony. I want to apologize to the family It was a mistake, Mr. Smith said, adding he had been friends with the victim for almost seven years.

After the hearing, Mr. Smith was released on prior bond and ordered to appear Jan. 7 at the Rock Island County Jail to begin serving his sentence. This is not an easy call to make because this incident is probably predictable, said Rock Island County Circuit Court Judge Walter IX Braud, citing Mr. Smiths history with drugs and alcohol.

It was probably only a matter of time before he had an accident and hurt someone. Mr. Pohl was not completely innocent either, the judge said. Mr. Smith testified he and Mr.

Pohl and Mr. Smith, both unemployed at the time of the incident, would meet weekly to drink and smoke pot Witnesses told officers they saw a white SUV flee the area and Mr. Pohl lying in an alley Moline Police Sgt. Tim DeVrieze testified Monday A White Chevy Blazer was discovered the next day at Mr. Smiths residence.

Passengers in the SUV told police they had been drinking with Mr. Smith before the drug deal When Mr. Pohl handed him money for the drugs, Mr. Smith proceeded to drive away, even after Mr. Pohl tried to grab onto the vehicle, the passengers told police.

Sgt. De Vrieez testified one of passengers told Mr. Smith, I think we just ran that guy over, when Mr. Pohl fell. If either of them could do that day over again, they would, the judge predicted, acknowledging that despite their imperfections, both men clearly had loving families, who crowded into the court room Monday to hear the verdict.

I feel alone because Ive lost my best friend, the victims 17-year-old daughter wrote in a letter read aloud at the hearing. Prior to her fathers death, she said, the two often took walks in the alley where he had been struck, where they would sit and talk. When I get married, I have no idea who will walk me down the aisle, her letter said, expressing remorse that her father will not be at her graduation or meet his future grandchildren. "I cry every day and every night, said Mr. Pohls girlfriend, Lori Gilmore, who broke into sobs throughout her testimony.

Mr. Pohl was her best friend and the love of my life, standing by her through tough times, she said. It is still unimaginable that 1 must live the rest of my life without Matt, she said, tears streaking down her face. Mr. Pohl has undoubtedly forgiven Mr.

She preceded him in death in 2004. Earl, along with his brother, John, started Collis Brothers Angus Cattle in rural Osco and was well-known for raising purebred Angus Cattle for 63 years. Earl was a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church, the Henry County Farm Bureau and the American Angus Association, of which, he was a life member. Earl enjoyed dancing with Lela.
